Campaign 2008
Votes your hopes, not your fears
Well, first we need to have the Green Party of Texas candidates recognized on the statewide ballot for November 2008! To do this we MUST petition!
Green Party Petitioning FAQ
I want to help the Green Party get on the November ballot. What do I do?
Attend a Green Party meeting and pick up a petition or if you can't make it to a meeting, download it from here: .
Note: It does not need to be on legal size paper (but it's easier to sign if it is), it can also be double sided (only if you use a pen that doesn’t bleed).
Who can sign the petition?
A person must be a registered voter in Texas AND did not vote on March 4th in the Democratic or Republican primary OR they did not participate in any party’s Precinct Conventions.
Will we sell their information or send them mailings?
No, unless they ask for information about the Green Party and we'll send it to them later.
Do they need their voter registration number to sign the petition?
No, we will look that up at a later time. If they have their certificate on them, they should write down the number. IT IS NOT ESSENTIAL to have them give it to you on the spot.
When can I start petitioning? When does it end?
Start petitioning on March 12th. You can petition until May 26th.
How many signatures do we need to have to get our candidates on the ballot?
The official number is 45,540 signatures of registered voters who did not vote in a primary or participate in another party's precinct convention. We actually need to collect 70,000 signatures due to error and bad signatures.
Whom should I ask to sign my petition?
Friends, family members, co-workers, persons at events and festivals. .
If I sign the petition does that mean I have to vote Green?
NO! It only means that you believe in an open and free democracy with many choices. You are only signing to help get the Green Party on the ballot and to give voters more choices in candidates.
I voted in the primary but I really believe that democracy means more choices on the ballot. Can I still help?
Yes! You can still gather signatures for the Green Party even if you voted in the primaries. The Greens do not discourage people from voting in elections for any reason but ask that you gather 10, 20, 100, or 1000 signatures.
I signed a petition for an independent candidate. Can I still sign the Green Party petition?
Yes, the Secretary of State's office has said that you may sign one petition for an independent candidate for each office AND the Green Party's petition. However, you may not sign two independent candidates’ petitions.
I don't have any friends or co-workers that will sign the petition, why bother with it?
Every signature is important even if its just one. Please sign the petition yourself. Remember, we have to obtain 70.000 raw signatures in 75 days.
OK, I'm done petitioning and I have all these petitions. What do I do now?
HANG ON TO THEM! Tarrant Greens will be having regular notarization gatherings. We will be in touch with you to let you know when meet-ups are held.
But I can't make the regular notarization gatherings! What now?
Easy, just get the petition notarized (usually your bank will do it for free for their customers) and mail it to
Tarrant County Green Party
PO Box 12303
Fort Worth, TX 76110
Or Call 817-800-4249 so arrangements can made for your petitions to be picked up. You can also e-mail:
tarrant-county@txgreens.org
IT IS CRITICAL THAT YOU GET THE PETITION NOTARIZED OR IT WILL NOT COUNT AND WE WILL HAVE TO SEND IT BACK TO YOU SO YOU CAN GET IT NOTARIZED.
I can't petition. What else can I do to help the Greens get on the ballot?
There are lots of things that can be done. We will really need help with verifying signaturesand checking signatures against the voting records.
- If you're a notary, we need free services! We need you at any of our meetings. If you're willing to travel somewhere to notarize someone's signature let us know!
- Other needs: Someone to locate opportune places we can petition, arrange for tabling at events, festivals, etc.
- Donate MONEY! The petition drive costs money and we will need money to pay for fees for events, make copies of materials, etc.
If you see something that is missing, contact us and let us know what you can offer.
Remember, this petition drive will only succeed if YOU participate. If you're serious about getting more choices on the ballot, get out there and do something for the drive!
